I went to see this film last week.
i did expect that this would be a good film. however my experience of the film was ... disappointing to say the least.
It was described as "a film that explores how childhood problems can be passed down through the family"
and the adverts make it seem like some creature feature horror film.
Watching the film this was what i saw:
A Spanish boy being chased around his house by some weird floaty thing that resembles the grim reaper, then all of a sudden it's in London and this girl finds a box with a story in it that she carries on writing, she then starts getting haunted by a faceless man in a raincoat who looks like the killer from 'i know what you did last summer'.
Then her father (Clive Owen) tries to fight off the man who keeps coming back (because Apparently he really really really wants the face of a 12 year old girl.) But then the father gets diagnosed with some mental illness and apparently this faceless man is imaginary... (so at this point its a film about mental illness).
The father, goes home to his mothers and it's then that we find out that the little Spanish boy from the beginning has grown up to be Clive Owen and has managed to develop a strong Cockney accent. He then goes back to his daughter who is still being harassed by the faceless raincoat man, tells her he understands whats going on and then everything is hunky-dory. End of film.
The thing is, if they would have decided on the concept of the film it could have been good. all the way through i was trying to answer one question: is this a creature feature or is it about mental illness??
this question does not get answered. Because watching the film actually raises more questions than it answers. until the end the main question is: who the hell is the little Spanish boy who keeps randomly appearing throughout the film? and how is he connected to Clive Owens daughter? the next question is: if this girl is being haunted by some man who she's writing about and the events she's writing about keep happening, wouldn't common sense dictate to STOP WRITING THE STORY? or at least write something like "the scary man suddenly realized he had no legs" I'd like to see someone try and haunt people with no legs. and this goes on and on and on for about 2 hours.
like i said disappointing, i walked away from this film with no idea as to what the film was actually about. I wouldn't recommend spending money to see it, however if you want to watch it and tell me what it's about, feel free.
Technically however, the shots were very well framed and lit. I think shallow depth of field was a little overused, especially on Clive Owens face however this could have been done to draw more attention to the characters emotions as this film happens in the foreground and doesn't use the background to create the scary atmosphere like you would see in films like 'Halloween - John Carpenter'.
So overall technically very good, but i wouldn't vote for it to win best screenplay.
