Documentary Idea

For the Documentary Project i am working with George Dupey, Mark Costello, Fraser Harrison and Luke Parker.

we have decided that we will be filming a Documentary about Albert dock, specifically the re-development and re-ferbishment of Albert Dock.
We will discuss the history of the dock and the reasons it declined, we will also attempt to get some interviews with the public and people who run shops around the dock and get there opinion on whether the referbishment is a good or a bad thing.

Blogger problems - pictures

I've been attempting to upload Screen-shots from our editing session for our experimental project for about 2 - 3 hours now.

but for some unknown reason blogger really doesn't want me to put them up. So if they don't come up, assume Blogger won.

The intruders - Juan Carlos Fresnadillo

I went to see this film last week.
i did expect that this would be a good film. however my experience of the film was ... disappointing to say the least.

It was described as "a film that explores how childhood problems can be passed down through the family"
and the adverts make it seem like some creature feature horror film.

Watching the film this was what i saw:
A Spanish boy being chased around his house by some weird floaty thing that resembles the grim reaper, then all of a sudden it's in London and this girl finds a box with a story in it that she carries on writing, she then starts getting haunted by a faceless man in a raincoat who looks like the killer from 'i know what you did last summer'.
Then her father (Clive Owen) tries to fight off the man who keeps coming back (because Apparently he really really really wants the face of a 12 year old girl.) But then the father gets diagnosed with some mental illness and apparently this faceless man is imaginary... (so at this point its a film about mental illness).
The father, goes home to his mothers and it's then that we find out that the little Spanish boy from the beginning has grown up to be Clive Owen and has managed to develop a strong Cockney accent. He then goes back to his daughter who is still being harassed by the faceless raincoat man, tells her he understands whats going on and then everything is hunky-dory. End of film.

The thing is, if they would have decided on the concept of the film it could have been good. all the way through i was trying to answer one question: is this a creature feature or is it about mental illness??
this question does not get answered. Because watching the film actually raises more questions than it answers. until the end the main question is: who the hell is the little Spanish boy who keeps randomly appearing throughout the film? and how is he connected to Clive Owens daughter? the next question is: if this girl is being haunted by some man who she's writing about and the events she's writing about keep happening, wouldn't common sense dictate to STOP WRITING THE STORY? or at least write something like "the scary man suddenly realized he had no legs" I'd like to see someone try and haunt people with no legs. and this goes on and on and on for about 2 hours.

like i said disappointing, i walked away from this film with no idea as to what the film was actually about. I wouldn't recommend spending money to see it, however if you want to watch it and tell me what it's about, feel free.

Technically however, the shots were very well framed and lit. I think shallow depth of field was a little overused, especially on Clive Owens face however this could have been done to draw more attention to the characters emotions as this film happens in the foreground and doesn't use the background to create the scary atmosphere like you would see in films like 'Halloween - John Carpenter'.

So overall technically very good, but i wouldn't vote for it to win best screenplay.

Widrich Virgil - Copy Shop (2001)

i watched this film to try and get some inspiration for our experimental piece. the first observation i made was how it has the appearance of a film that was made in the 20's rather than a film that was made in 2001 which i think is a brilliant way to make the film stand out. This also makes this experimental piece look more authentic as many of the original experimental shorts i have seen are black and white and contain no dialogue.

i don't know if Virgil intended any meaning behind this piece, but to me it speaks of consumerism. how in our modern climate, because of our use of technology to make life easier and the way our education system works we are not really individual people anymore. rather we are a mass of churned out or 'photocopied' identical machines that are conditioned into a exact routine. and this film is showing us that we need to break away from it. and i think the message is even stronger with the fact that Virgil hand cut all the clips and tape himself rather than using editing software.
The scene at around 8 minutes when he goes back to the copy shop and all the copies are standing outside, seems to relate to the mass of people fighting over jobs and careers, i.e. young people go to uni to better themselves and persue a dream career, but because there are so many people also wanting to the same thing and because of the way everyone is churned out to be identical, it becomes a game of lining up waiting for the job rather than showing off your individuality and skills.

i really enjoyed this piece. which i was rather surprised at because i have not usually enjoyed many of the experimental films i have watched. and although our piece is a seperate subject i think we will be able to use the idea of the same person appearing in the same shot but in a different way, rather than being the same person, ours is the same person but as the main character would like to see himself.

The Student Syndrome

Our idea for the experimental project is as follows:

Our chosen word that we are basing our idea around is "stress", We are going to show the stresses of a student trying to finish their work close to a deadline. during the piece the student becomes more and more frustrated and angry with his work. until eventually he snaps. we plan to show visual representations of what is happening inside the mind of the student. this will include an actual person talking to himself and a kettle boiling to show that he has reached "boiling point".

we are also drawing on inspirations from films such as 'fight club' and 'copy shop' and we are planning to show an 'alternative character' or 'alter ego' which is to represent what the character would rather be doing or who he would rather be, at that point.

Our other inspirations come from the following films:

'The Shining' - we are going to have a document that repeats a single word of phrase over and over again, this will show that (like in the shining) the character is loosing his mind.

'Eraser head' - some very long shots

we are wanting to edit the wanting to edit the pice so that the beginning starts slow and the cuts get faster and faster towards the end.
