Call me mainstream or Obvious, but i think it's safe to say that Steven Spielberg is my favourite director and biggest inspiration. I've looked at loads of my films at home again, and most of them are Steven Spielberg films.
I recently went to see War Horse, it's by far one of the best films i've ever seen!!!
For anyone who doesn't know the plot:
A farmers son raises a horse on his farm and teaches it to plough and respond to a bird noise, the horse gets commandeered by the army when the war breaks out against the will of the farmers son who raised him. the horse then travels across France touching the lives of everyone it meets including: an English officer, german soldiers, french soldiers, a girl and her grandfather and even a fellow horse. while the boy joins the army in the hopes of one day being reunited with his horse.
This story is heart warming, uplifting and truly emotional. I was sat with a painful lump in my throat the whole way through, if i hadn't have willed myself not to, i would have cried my eyes out.
I take my hat off to everyone involved in it's making and i hope to one day make a film that is as magnificent and touching as this one is. I would recommend this film over and over and over until everyone has seen it. there are no words in existence that truly do the film justice!
Technically this film is breathtaking. The very way Spielberg has used Extreme close ups and even extreme long shots to show the shear terror felt by the horse is genius. The sound design - using a mix of loud explosions and emotional and fast paced orchestral music makes you feel the same fear that the horse would feel while running through no mans land. And he has managed (using shots and music combined) to skip instantly between fear to sadness, sadness to happiness. the list goes on.
Spielberg has done everything in one film that i want to achieve in my own career.
GO AND SEE IT!!!!
and just to make the film all the more awesome. John Williams composed the music :-D
